How to Research Finance Creators for Educational Content

Separate financial education from recommendations, verify relevant roles and plan a claims-reviewed budgeting demonstration.

  • Classify the proposed message
  • Verify relevant claims about the creator
  • Worked example: a monthly budget lesson
  • Assess the advertisement, not just the creator

Research finance creators by the exact educational topic, relevant qualifications and conflicts. Explaining a household budget is different from recommending investments or selling credit. Public popularity does not establish professional authorization, product suitability or truthful performance claims. Decide which kind of message you are commissioning before contacting candidates.

Classify the proposed message

Write the topic, intended audience question and product connection. Mark whether the asset teaches arithmetic, describes a product, recommends an action or uses a testimonial. Have the actual message and landing page reviewed for the applicable market; a disclaimer does not turn every recommendation into neutral education.

  • Budget explainers should state assumptions and distinguish examples from advice for an individual.
  • Investment or credit content needs review appropriate to the product and jurisdiction.
  • Check incentives such as referral fees, affiliate links and competing sponsors; do not infer undisclosed holdings from a profile.

Verify relevant claims about the creator

Use the Pro Creator Finder for TikTok, Instagram and YouTube discovery. Read complete explanations and examine cited calculations. If the creator claims a regulated role, use the appropriate official register and direct clarification. FINRA BrokerCheck scope applies to its covered professionals; it is not a registry of every financial educator worldwide.

  1. 1

    Check a worked calculation

Reproduce the arithmetic and record missing assumptions, fees or conditions.

  2. 2

    Record role verification

Save the claimed title, register used, date and any limitations or unresolved identity match.

  3. 3

    Review the partnership

Confirm conflicts, factual corrections, approvals and distribution terms before agreeing to an asset.

Worked example: a monthly budget lesson

A fictional budgeting app compares an educator who explains irregular expenses with an account promising instant wealth. Commission a synthetic budget walkthrough from the former only after reviewing the explanation and agreement. It should show tradeoffs, not imply every household has the same income or obligations.

  • Worksheet: topic; source/date; claimed role; verification source; assumptions; arithmetic check; product claim; incentive; reviewer; approval status.
  • Example inputs: label an invented income and expense table, separate recurring bills from irregular costs and identify the assumptions behind a buffer.
  • Hold conditions: unverified performance promises, hidden fees, pressure language or advice beyond the approved brief.

Assess the advertisement, not just the creator

FTC advertising guidance addresses substantiation. Ask qualified reviewers to inspect the final script, links and product claims. Use brand-fit assessment as a bounded content review, not a financial background certification.

Frequently asked questions

Does a large following prove financial expertise?

No. Verify relevant roles and inspect explanations, evidence and conflicts.

Does absence from BrokerCheck prove fraud?

No. BrokerCheck covers particular professionals. Use the register appropriate to the claimed role and market.

Can a budgeting example be presented as a typical customer result?

Only with suitable evidence for that claim. Otherwise label the numbers as an illustrative exercise.
