Product-marketing social research identifies candidate questions and language, then checks whether your message and product proof answer them accurately. Treat observed objections as hypotheses to investigate. Matching a commenter’s wording does not validate positioning, demonstrate purchase intent or establish that a feature should enter the roadmap.

Separate the message, capability and evidence

Write the audience task, your proposed promise and the product capability that would fulfill it. Verify the capability with the product owner and current documentation before testing wording. A clear sentence cannot rescue a feature promise that is inaccurate, unavailable on the intended plan or dependent on an undisclosed integration.

Record whether the source is a vendor claim, user description or question. Public role information does not identify a qualified buyer. Compare social observations with authorized customer research and support evidence; keep their methods separate rather than pretending they are one representative dataset.

Use public language to draft questions

LinkedIn search provides categories for professional posts and companies, while Comment Insights can investigate available questions for a niche and platform. Inspect the actual source and preserve affiliation, parent context and date. A summary is not a verbatim quote.

GOV.UK research planning separates assumptions from research questions. Apply that distinction to copy: a recurring expression can suggest wording to test, but it is not automatically pre-tested language that will convert. Include people whose needs may be absent from public discussions in any further research.

Message, capability and proof review

Draft message and evidenceValidation or correction
Audience taskSpecific problem, context and current alternativeWhat evidence supports the task beyond one public reply?
PromisePlain statement of the outcome the product offersCan the actual product fulfill it under the stated conditions?
CapabilityCurrent feature, plan, permission and implementation requirementA product reviewer confirms the exact claim
ProofOriginal demonstration or approved real resultShow what the evidence establishes without exaggeration
ValidationComprehension question, suitable participants and next decisionRecord misunderstood claims and contrary findings
Message, capability and proof review; fill with inspected evidence

Worked example: team task handovers

A fictional product marketer researches a task tool and sees questions about remembering who owns the next step. The proposed message is “keep the next owner visible.” Product verification confirms that assignment is available but automated escalation is not. The wording must not become “never miss a handover.”

The proof is an original walkthrough of assigning an owner, attaching context and checking the next due action. A comprehension test asks participants what the tool does automatically and what the team must still do. If they infer autonomous escalation, the message or demonstration needs correction even if they describe it as appealing. This illustrative review contains no measured product result or customer testimonial.

Route requests without turning repetition into a roadmap

A feature request describes a desired solution; investigate the underlying task and current workaround before committing. Several copied comments in one thread may not be independent needs. Keep source relationships and a contrary example when present. Product can prioritize further investigation using its own evidence and constraints.

For competitor launches, verify the advertised capability and conditions before writing a battlecard. Content-Gap Explorer can help surface questions and available answers, but it does not prove that no other vendor addresses them. Public launch reaction is not an experiment with known treatment, audience and business outcome.

Report the decision and the next check

End with a supported claim, unresolved conditions, the required proof and an owner. The deliverable can be a corrected sentence, a demo brief or a further research task. Record disconfirming evidence as carefully as favorable language. Manually revisit the source set when features or terms change.

Continue with SaaS buyer-task comparisons, market hypotheses, comment coding and content briefs. Social insight contributes a question and context; the product and its verified evidence determine what marketing can responsibly promise.

Sources and research notes

Reviewed on 11 October 2026 against the linked official documentation and current Superlurk tool descriptions. The procedure and message-capability-proof validation worksheet are editorial guidance. Worked examples, sample counts and decisions are illustrative, not a measured customer study. Public-source coverage and native account eligibility vary; inspect the actual source and record missing evidence. How we approach social research.

No. Investigate the underlying task, independence, alternatives and operational constraints.

What should a product marketer deliver?

A reviewed message connected to a verified capability, supporting proof and the next validation decision.
